Why a Community Foundation Matters More Than Most People Realize

Most of us can name a handful of nonprofits doing important work in our community. We know the food bank helping a family through a difficult season. The organization giving kids a safe place to go after school. The volunteers caring for animals, supporting older adults, protecting our environment, bringing the arts to life, or stepping in when someone needs help.

More Than Grantmaking

A community foundation is sometimes thought of simply as an organization that gives grants to nonprofits. Grantmaking is certainly an important part of what we do, but the role of the Greater Green Valley Community Foundation extends much further.

We help connect the people who want to make a difference with the organizations already doing the work.

That means working with donors who want their charitable giving to have meaningful impact. It means supporting nonprofits with resources, relationships, education, visibility, and funding opportunities. It means bringing businesses and community leaders into the conversation. And it means paying attention to the needs and opportunities emerging throughout our region.

Local Knowledge Matters

There is something especially powerful about philanthropy rooted in the community it serves.

Southern Arizona is not one community with one set of needs. Green Valley is different from Sahuarita. Tubac is different from Arivaca. Rio Rico and Nogales bring their own strengths, challenges, organizations, and people to our region.

The Greater Green Valley Community Foundation serves communities throughout the I-19 corridor and surrounding Southern Arizona region, including Green Valley, Sahuarita, Amado, Arivaca, Tubac, Tumacacori, Rio Rico, and Nogales.

That local connection matters.

It allows us to build relationships with the organizations doing the work and better understand where resources, partnerships, and community attention can make a difference.

Giving Is Only One Way to Make a Difference

Philanthropy is often associated with writing a check.

We believe it is much bigger than that.

Communities are strengthened by people willing to give their money, certainly, but also their time, experience, talents, relationships, ideas, and energy.

A retired executive may have knowledge that could transform a small nonprofit.
