Electric service first came to Bryan in 1889 through a private company that installed street lighting, but when better service and lower rates could not be agreed upon in 1896, community leaders took action. After a special election, residents approved bonds to purchase or build their own municipally owned power plant and electrical distribution system. That decision laid the foundation for a community-focused Electric Department committed to providing reliable service and local control for generations to come.
