Alcoholism

Treatment for alcoholism is centered on achieving and maintaining abstinence while supporting long-term recovery. Individuals with limited social support, lower motivation, or co-occurring psychiatric conditions may face a higher risk of relapse; for these individuals, progress is often measured by extended periods of abstinence, reduced alcohol use, improved physical health, and stronger social functioning. Recovery and ongoing maintenance commonly incorporate 12-step programs and participation in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings, which provide structure, accountability, and peer support to help sustain sobriety over time.
