Since 2014, CUSP has been studying how native wood-rotting mushrooms can help turn wood chips, a common by-product of forest restoration, into something useful. With the help of partners and many dedicated volunteers, this long-term project has shown how fungi naturally break down tough fibers like cellulose and lignin, transforming piles of wood chips into rich, compost-like material similar to natural humus. The goal is to create a low-effort, sustainable process that works on its own, and each season brings us closer to making that vision a reality.
