El Paso County maintains over 1,000 miles of gravel roads across 23 areas, with regular upkeep including grading, resurfacing, ditching, and dust control. Crews grade the roads every six to eight weeks, re-establish crowns for drainage, and apply dust abatement to about 80 miles each year. Gravel is added where needed, and culverts are repaired or replaced to meet safety standards. During winter, the Department of Public Works plows roads by priority to ensure safe access for emergency services, schools, and residents.
